Glencraft, a social enterprise with 182 years of continuous heritage, has appointed three new trustee directors to help further its mission of creating meaningful employment for people whose talents deserve equitable access to work.
From its Aberdeen workshop and showroom, Glencraft continues the tradition of handcrafting luxury mattresses and soft furnishings – a craft rooted in the belief that skilled work can change lives, a principle that has shaped the organisation since its earliest days.
The appointments of Rachel Jones, Steven Mearns and Jack Scott bring additional commercial insight and entrepreneurial experience to Glencraft’s board, which now comprises six members. Their arrival supports the organisation’s wider UK and international growth strategy, ensuring that its social purpose remains at the centre of its development.
Donald MacKay, chief executive of Glencraft, said:
“The extensive business experience of our new directors strengthens the work under way to position Glencraft as one of Scotland’s leading social enterprises. Their insight will help us extend our reach into new markets at home and overseas, while honouring the heritage of craftsmanship and social impact that has guided us for generations.
Their support will help us continue our purpose of creating opportunities through meaningful work and producing exceptional products that improve people’s lives.”
Director Profiles
Rachel Jones brings a blend of entrepreneurial and third-sector expertise through her work with Smart Works Scotland and as an associate with Social Investment Scotland. She has founded and grown three companies, including Totseat — the squashable, washable highchair for babies who lunch — and SnapDragon Monitoring, recipient of the King’s Award for Enterprise in International Trade. She studied at the University of Aberdeen and now lives in Edinburgh.
Steven Mearns is a chartered accountant and director at TaxAssist Accountants, with offices in Aberdeen, Banchory and Inverurie. He also serves on the board of the Aberdeen & Grampian Chamber of Commerce. Originally from Inverness, he is now based in Aboyne.
Jack Scott offers strong commercial and financial experience from his most recent role as investment director at a London-based private equity fund. Originally from Aberdeen and now based in Edinburgh, he brings valuable market access and strategic insight to Glencraft’s continued development.
Leadership reflections
Jonathan Smith, chair of Glencraft, said:
“Welcoming three new directors is an important step for Glencraft. Their experience strengthens the work already under way across the organisation.
I also want to acknowledge the leadership of our CEO, Donald Mackay, whose focus has driven our recent progress. The added support of these directors will help Donald and the wider team continue to advance Glencraft’s impact.”
The appointments form part of a planned board transition that will see Allan Clow step down in early 2026. The remaining directors are Ken Robertson and Neil Skene.
